Mary Poppins Continues To Soar On Broadway

One of my fondest childhood memories was seeing Mary Poppins for the first time on television. Until then I had never encountered anything so enchanting and fun. So imagine how happy I was when it was announced that one of my favorite movies was coming to the Broadway stage. I am happy to report that not only did the "Broadway" version exceed all my expectations but it made me fall in love with Mary Poppins all over again. Now I'll be the first to admit that I have never been a fan of Disney and their reign on Broadway. Until Mary Poppins the only Disney show I had seen was Aida and that was mostly do to the fact that it wasn't a cartoon before hand.Mary Poppins is a winner on all levels. Great cast,charming songs, and a story that will warm your heart. What more could you ask for in a Broadway musical right? Now for those of you that think this show is only for kids you would be mistaken. It is perfect for any age.I should know. I'm not exactly a kid anymore myself.

I was almost 20 years old when the movie Mary Poppins was released. It was a great hit but received more notoriety because Julie Andrews won the Oscar as Best Actress and beat Audrey Hepburn who took Julie Andrews' role in My Fair Lady, who was also up for am academy award for Best Actress..

Mary Poppins was fantastic as a movie and it is even more fantastic as a Broadway Musical. I guess I started to appreciate it when Disney invited us to see previews of Mary Poppins. They had a full symphony orchestra play the music from Mary Poppins as a Classical Piece. It was then that it really struck me how spectacular the music to Mary Poppins is.
One of the advantages of Mary Poppins is that it has appeal for both adults and children. We have sold an incredible amount of tickets for Mary Poppins and have never had anyone tell us that they didn't like the show.

As I think about the setting, the music, the choreography, the acting, the voices and the special effects, it seems almost impossible to not like Mary Poppins. If you need to take someone to a Broadway show or if you would like to take someone to a Broadway show, Mary Poppins is ideal, no matter what age even a teenage boy (who will never admit he liked it). I wouldn't advise it for a Bachelor Party, however. But jokes aside, this version of Mary Poppins has an adult storyline as well as a Children's fairyland.

Another bonus is that Mary Poppins is one of the shows on Applause's BFV program. Prices are BELOW FACE VALUE. This is a real help these days where so many of us are under economic pressure. If we would like to do something special for ourselves and or for our family and friends without breaking the bank, Mary Poppins would be an excellent choice. A great show and BFV prices. Disney and Applause Theatre Service are offering some really big savings this Winter! One that you should try and catch is the wonderfully staged, spectacular "Mary Poppins". Broadway has great savings these next few months and now's the best chance to catch all of these top shows at a great price! When I first saw "Mary Poppins"(I've seen it 3 times!), we expected to see the movie on stage, but the plays storyline is different. We weren't disappointed at all as that made it a new and unexpected experience. (The songs from the movie are all there, plus a few new ones.)
The staging is amazing. Most of the action centers around the Banks house on 17 Cherry Tree Lane. This three story edifice fills the stage. When it retracts, the attic (where the Banks children's bedroom is located) descends to stage level.
The actors portraying the Banks family and their staff are outstanding. There's always the fear that the "precocious" level will be a bit too high when it comes to child actors, but "Michael and Jane" were wonderful.
It's hard to say which one number was a show-stopper. "Jolly Holiday", "Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious" and "Spoonful of Sugar" come to mind, but if I had to pick, "Step in Time" is the one that stood out from the rest. Tap-dancing chimney sweeps fill the stage in this rousing number. The standout is Bert who (thanks to Disney magic) walks up a wall, dances across the ceiling, and walks down the other side. WOW!!
On the other end of the spectrum, the beautiful "Feed the Birds" is the same quiet, heart tugging number as in the screen version of Mary Poppins. (Bring the Kleenex.)
There's kite flying and "nanny" flying as well. Suffice it to say, the finale will leave you wide eyed in amazement, but I don't want to spoil it for those of you who plan on going. (I probably said too much already.)
The play ended with a well deserved standing ovation. I couldn't believe it when I looked at my watch and almost 3 hours had gone by!
